Do You Need to Register for VAT?

Under UAE Federal Decree-Law No. (8) of 2017 on Value Added Tax, registration thresholds are calculated based on the past 12 months or anticipated next 30 days of taxable supplies.

Strategic Wealth Architecture

> AED 375,000

Compulsory for any UAE business whose annual taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000. Late registration carries an immediate AED 10,000 FTA fine.

Voluntary Registration

> AED 187,500

Optional for growing startups whose taxable supplies or expenses exceed AED 187,500, enabling them to recover input VAT incurred on business startup expenses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Essential clarity on thresholds, late penalties, filing frequencies, and Freezone tax compliance.

VAT registration is mandatory when your business’s taxable supplies and imports have exceeded AED 375,000 over the previous 12-month period, or if you anticipate that they will exceed AED 375,000 in the next 30 days. You have 30 days from crossing the threshold to apply for your TRN with the FTA.

Under FTA Cabinet Resolution No. 49 of 2021:
• Late VAT Registration: A fixed fine of AED 10,000.
• Late Return Filing: AED 1,000 for the first offense and AED 2,000 for repeated offenses within 24 months.
• Late Tax Payment: 2% immediately, followed by 4% per month on the unpaid tax balance up to a maximum of 300%.

For the majority of UAE businesses, the Federal Tax Authority assigns a quarterly tax period. High-turnover enterprises or specialized sectors may be assigned a monthly filing schedule. In both cases, the VAT return and corresponding payment must be submitted no later than the 28th day following the end of the tax period.

No. UAE Free Zone companies (including those in Designated Zones) are subject to the same VAT registration criteria as mainland entities. If a Free Zone company’s taxable turnover exceeds AED 375,000, it must register for VAT. Designated Zone companies enjoy zero-rated treatment solely on qualifying cargo transfers within specific fenced zones.

Yes. Our certified tax agents conduct a detailed review of your tax ledger, prepare formal Voluntary Disclosures (Form 211) to rectify past errors, and submit Reconsideration Applications and Penalty Waiver Petitions to the FTA Tax Disputes Resolution Committee (TDRC).
